Ryant Washington, Deputy Secretary

In January of 2018, Ryant Washington was appointed as Deputy Secretary of Public Safety and Homeland Security by Governor Ralph Northam. In this role, Deputy Secretary Washington serves as the liaison for the Virginia State Police, Virginia Department of Emergency Management, Fire Programs, Military Affairs and the Homeland Security Division.

In 2014, He was appointed Special Policy Advisor for Law Enforcement at the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control by Governor Terry McAuliffe. Prior to joining the administrations, Ryant served as Sheriff of Fluvanna County for 14 ½ years. He has served in law enforcement since 1990 both as a Deputy Sheriff and as Virginia State Trooper. His education and training includes a diploma in Business Administration from National Business College, studies at the Criminal Justice Program at Piedmont Virginia Community College, and completion of the Executive Management Training at the National Sheriffs’ Institute.

He is Past President of the Virginia Sheriffs’ Association and former member Board of Directors for the National Sheriffs’ Association. He is also a former member of the National Commission on Forensic Science and the Piedmont Virginia Community College Police Advisory Board. Ryant has served in a variety of leadership positions on local and statewide boards, committees and commissions.
